In Indonesia, fully vaccinated frontline health workers themselves are reported to be getting sick and many of them have died.
The New York Times reported on Friday that they became sick and some of them died in a few days of testing positive, even after being administered the Sinovac, a Chinese vaccine.
As mentioned in the report, Indonesian Medical Association attested that at least 20 doctors who had died in the country since the pandemic began were fully vaccinated with Sinovac Biotech, the Chinese-made vaccine. Likewise, the vaccination status of about 31 others, who had died in the last five months, is now being searched.
As reported, one of the health professionals who died after taking both dozes of the Sinovac was Dr. Suhendro Sastrowiwoho, a frontline medical worker at the town of Kudus in Java. Although he was fully vaccinated, he died just few days after testing positive for Covid-19 on 18 June. In the same way, two nurses and a nutritionist, who had been fully vaccinated, also died this month in the same town.
An efficacy assessment among Indonesia's health workers had indicated Sinovac's success against death from infection earlier this month. However, it was yet to study much about its effect on the Delta variant.
The deaths of the vaccinated frontline workers in Indonesia with the new Delta variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has indicated towards the failing efficacy of certain vaccines in dealing with particular strains, reported NYT.
Quoting to the risk mitigation team of the Indonesian Doctors Association, NYT reported that nearly 358 medical workers, after being fully vaccinated with the Sinovac vaccine, have tested positive for Covid-19 in the duration of two weeks in Kudus, a small Indonesian town.
According to reports, less than 5% of Indonesia's total population has currently been vaccinated, although the vaccination campaign started in January. Most of the vaccinated Indonesians had received doses of Sinovac.
Other countries, NYT further reports, like Mongolia, Seychelles, and Bahrain,. where people were mostly vaccinated with Chinese Covid-19 vaccines, are facing a surge in infections now. In accordance with a last week's report, these were among the top 10 countries with the worst Covid-19 outbreaks.
