On 26 May 2021, the moon will have the nearest approach to earth, making it appear as the closet and largest Full Moon of the year. Such a moon is commonly referred to as a 'SuperMoon', which will not just seem brighter and bigger, it is  also going to change its color into red for a while.

At that time, the moon will come to the distance of only 357 thousand 309 kilometres from the earth. Some people assume that the celestial event may cause disasters like earthquake, Tsunami and volcano. But such claims do not have any scientific evidence.

On the day, a total lunar eclipse will occur when the earth lies completely between the Sun and the moon in a straight line. During this type of eclipse, the moon will gradually get darker with the shadow of the earth, taking on a rusty or blood-red color. When the shadow of the earth falls on the lunar surface, the moon will be seen red. Such a red moon is known as the Blood Moon.

Astronomers say the total eclipse phase will be visible near moonset in the western United States and Canada, all of Mexico, most of Central America and Ecuador, western Peru, and southern Chile and Argentina. The eclipse can be seen in its entirety in eastern Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands, including Hawaii.

The eclipse is set to begin on 26 May at 1:46 a.m. PDT, with the moon entering the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow at 2:45 a.m. Part of it will remain in the umbra until 5:53 a.m. All of the moon’s surface will be seen blanketed by the earth’s dark shadow, and the period of total eclipse will remain for 14 minutes.

According to astronomers, you won’t need any special glasses to view this lunar eclipse unlike a solar eclipse. They suggest you just to go outside and turn your head to the sky.

But unfortunately, the event will not be witnessed from Nepal as the period of eclipse will have ended before the moon rises in Nepal.
