Many unidentified human dead bodies have been found on the bank of the Ganga river, mainly in different places of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Officials of Bihar said 71 bodies had been retrieved and cremated after autopsies that had failed to confirm whether the deaths were caused by Covid-19 or not.
Earlier to that, on Tuesday, officials of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh were engaged in blaming over each other for dumping the dead bodies, a day after dozens of half-burnt and decomposed corpses that Ganga had washed ashore at the Chausa village in Buxar.
Union jal shakti minister of India, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, termed the dumping of corpses in Ganga as 'unfortunate' and a matter that must be investigated.
Boxar's district magistrate Aman Shamir said that the bodies were not from the state. He blamed that the bodies were dumped in neighbouring Ghajipur district of Uttar Pradesh. But Ghajipur DM Mangla Prasad Singh denied the charge and said, 'As the bodies were found there(in Boxar), they would know better about their origin'.
Ghajipur district officials informed that some officials had visited the spots and further investigations were going on.
Environmentalists say, finding so many corpses, transported by the holy Ganga river, in the midst of such a strong impact of Covid-19 pandemic, has raised concerns about possibly more frighting situation in the days to come.
